Position on the Dynamic Coaching Staff of the Atom Smashers

Durham Region Roller Derby (DRRD) is looking to fill the 4th coaching/management position for its WFTDA Charter Team – The Atom Smashers. Working closely with an experienced coaching staff consisting of Head Coach Amefyst, Jammer Coach Biff Malibu, and Coach/Bench Manager Fowl Play, you will play a dynamic coaching role with the passionate competitive travel team. The coaching role is not yet strictly defined, but the right person will work well with the current coaching staff and team, be able to support the team’s growth, maintain our established supportive team culture, and help us improve our rankings in 2020. We are looking for someone who can be committed to our team, including attending practices and travelling to games. Previous coaching or management skills are an asset, especially with previous bench coaching or line managing experience for a roller derby team, and/or derby statistical knowledge.

DRRD joined the WFTDA this year, and as of September 1st, 2019, we officially entered the WFTDA rankings at 122. The Atom Smashers are an incredibly motivated team ready to play competitive games, and we are ready for our toughest season yet. The DRRD league is comprised of three travel teams, but the successful applicant would only be expected to hold responsibilities with the Atom Smashers.

Responsibilities:
  1. Sign and Adhere to Durham Region Roller Derby’s Code of Conduct (copy available upon request).
  2. Be willing to act as bench coach, line manager, or as support bench staff (g. run stats) during games and scrimmages – it is not essential that you are experienced in all of these positions, but being willing to learn is crucial.
  3. Work with the Coaching Staff and Co-Captains to support the goals for the season.
  4. Assess individual and team performance to determine strengths and areas of opportunity for further development, and provide constructive
  5. Assist and lead team practices and prepare the team for the competitive bouting season. This includes:
    • ensuring a safe physical and emotional environment;
    • being knowledgeable about game rules and strategy;
    • communicating instruction and feedback using clear, simple language;
    • inspiring confidence in players and encouraging them to train and perform to a high standard;
    • analyzing game and practice performance to determine training needs.
 Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Team athletics coaching experience
  • Strong command of the WFTDA ruleset
  • Positive attitude, great communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to remain calm and make tough decisions under pressure
  • Ability to set goals and prioritize tasks
  • Collaborative approach to problem solving
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Valid passport and able to travel internationally
  • Able to fund travel (gas/plane/hotels/food etc.)
Commitment
  • Attend the majority of team practices on Monday evenings from 7:30-10pm in Oshawa, Ontario
  • Attend 100% of WFTDA sanctioned games
  • Participation in off-skates sessions, fundraising efforts, and league activities where appropriate
Application Process
  • Submit an application package to Smashers@drrd.ca – on or before Monday, October 14th which includes:
    • A brief letter telling us why you are interested in joining the coaching staff of the Atom Smashers (400 words max).
    • A coaching resume highlighting any relevant previous experience
    • A minimum of 1 reference letter from an existing WFTDA/Non-WFTDA league member that speaks to your skills and interest in the position (interpersonal skills, and coaching style) (250 words max).
  • Applicants will be notified by the Coaching Staff of the Atom Smashers via email or phone on or before Thursday, October 17th. The successful candidate will then participate in a 3 week trial period.
